Welcoming back Young Artists
We are delighted to bring details of the young artists who will be exhibiting their work alongside professional artists at our Open Studio Weekend; Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December 2024.
Susan Aggarwal has been working with some of these young artists as part of her practice and now we have been joined for a project by St John’s Primary School James Street, Failsworth.
The project seeks to connect modern artistic practice to the converted textile mill where we, as a creative community, are based.
Stage 1 of the project gives the children free reign over their work on the theme of ‘nature’ and Susan advised;
Children have explored working in Acrylics Press printing , Charcoal drawing working from still life , and Acrylic still life painting on canvas board . The children enjoy the FREEDOM to explore their unique creativity in a RELAXED environment . My studio offers this ambience .
These works will form the exhibition for the upcoming event.
Stage 2 of the project will be to get the works photographed and printed onto cotton; Woodend Mill, Mossley was an innovative mill back in the mid nineteenth century, when it was one of the first to incorporate both spinning and weaving within a single facility. We have many photographers here and they will be part of realising this stage. We will use cotton produced locally in the traditional way. We will then decide how to present the final piece at our next open studio in mid-2025. Thus creating a full circle of bringing the original function of the cotton mill and the current artist practices together. This is part of a wider series of event we are planning based on ‘textiles at Woodend Mill, Mossley’.
It also offers young artists the opportunity to take their work to new levels, exploring the relevance of art and design in all areas of life. Encouraging them to realise it is creative minds that create our world and everything in it. We wish for them to see what we see; that they are part of a larger picture and broader horizons are theirs to explore. We are excited to offer them a path and walk a few steps along it in their charming company.
