Who We Are

Woodend Mill, Mossley was built in the 1840’s and was a working textile mill for both yarn processing and weaving until the demise of the cotton industry.

This converted textile mill, at the foot of the Pennines in Tameside, is now home to a collection of creative industries.

There has been a tradition of practicing artists at Woodend Mill, Mossley since the 1970’s and the community is stronger than it has ever been.

The artists, makers, designers, performing arts and independent businesses now based here continue to thrive, grow and diversify maintaining, at the centre of it all, community. We contribute to, and welcome in, our local community because we know the power of art, creativity and inclusivity.

There is a dizzying wealth of practicing artists, independent designers and makers; not to mention a number of learning opportunities; many residents hold workshops and courses, teaching their skills to others.

We count among our studio holders painters, sculptures, ceramicists, visual arts, performing arts, leather craft, fashion designers, surface pattern artists, furniture upholsterers, woodworkers, photographers, textiles, embroidery, yarn production, prop-makers, stained glass designers, interior designers, engineers and many who defy pigeonholes. As a collective the tenants here represent skills, craftsmanship, design and ingenuity of the highest order. Twice a year we open our studios to showcase the talent within our history-laden walls. But you can get in touch with studio holders at any time to discuss a project or idea you have. Take a look at our studio holders profiles here.

Wooden Mill is also home to several foodies, producing sweet treats and savoury fair; so a visit is always worthwhile. Why not stop off from your walk along the canal for a snack or lunch.

The creative community continues to grow and we welcome new studio holders, if you are looking for somewhere to base your creative practice see our available studios here.
